Jake Paul Contemplates Retirement After Suffering Broken Jaw in Loss to Anthony Joshua

Posted on: 05/12/2026

Jake Paul has revealed that he may end his boxing career after fracturing his jaw in last month’s defeat to Anthony Joshua. The social media star-turned-fighter shared an X-ray image showing the break and stated that further medical evaluations will determine his future in the sport.

“I’m going to get new scans on my jaw in a few days to get an update on the healing process. Let’s see what my doctors say and whether I can fight again. That (retiring) is definitely a possibility,” Paul told podcaster Ariel Helwani. He added that the pain has subsided but the recovery depends on how the bone heals. “It’s gotten a lot better as the weeks have passed. I think it all depends on how the bone heals. I’m also missing a tooth here, and I’m pretty sure I’ll need some kind of implant. We just have to wait and find out what’s smartest for me.”

The 28-year-old YouTuber-turned-boxer suffered a sixth-round TKO loss to Anthony Joshua, marking his second career defeat and first by knockout. After enduring three knockdowns, the referee stopped the fight in the third round. Paul lost teeth and fractured his jaw during the bout, which took place at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida. He subsequently underwent facial surgery, receiving two titanium plates on each side of his jaw and having several teeth removed. “The surgery went well, thank you for all the love and support. Two titanium plates on each side and some teeth removed. I have to eat only liquids for seven days,” he posted on social media at the time.

Before the procedure, Paul had expressed intentions to return to boxing after recovery, stating he would rest and then move up to the cruiserweight division. However, in January, the Florida Athletic Commission issued him an indefinite medical suspension, with no specified timeline for his return, requiring medical clearance before he can step back into the ring.
