Patrick Erras will leave Holstein Kiel after this season. The club has decided not to extend the expiring contract of the long-injured defender, who has been sidelined for 18 months due to a concussion sustained in training in December 2024. The 31-year-old’s recent statements about his future suggest he may never return to the pitch, with a career-ending scenario looking increasingly likely.
Erras, who joined Kiel from Werder Bremen in 2021, revealed in a farewell interview on the club’s website: “Since the concussion – it was in December 2024, a long time ago – I’ve still been having issues, so I haven’t been able to play since then, and I’m still dealing with it.” His last appearance in a Holstein jersey was the Bundesliga match on November 29 against FC St. Pauli (1-3).
Overall, Erras played 86 games for KSV and was part of the promotion-winning squad in the 2023/24 season. In the top flight, he scored a crucial 1-0 winner in the relegation six-pointer against 1. FC Heidenheim on matchday 9, though the points ultimately weren’t enough to keep Kiel in the Bundesliga. He finished with 33 Bundesliga appearances for Kiel, Werder Bremen, and his youth club 1. FC Nürnberg, where he turned professional in 2015.
After leaving Kiel, Erras plans to move back to his home region of Bavaria. When asked whether he could return to competitive football there, he left the door open: “Every footballer’s number one goal is to be on the pitch. If you can’t achieve that, or if health issues don’t allow you to return, it’s not always easy. But I’ve found a better way to deal with it. If it’s not meant to be, then it’s not meant to be. You have to find the best way to solve it and move forward.”
