At the FIFA Congress held on April 30 in Vancouver, the official agenda did not include the return of Russian teams to international competitions. However, according to sources present at the event, informal discussions in the corridors centered on a potential roadmap for Russia’s reintegration.
The proposed scheme focuses on the gradual return of youth teams under 17 and women’s national squads. This approach has gained support from football federations in South America, Africa, and Asia, who view it as a pragmatic first step.
In contrast, the reinstatement of Russia’s senior national team and clubs remains a more complex and contentious issue. FIFA President Gianni Infantino is reportedly not pushing for a decision on this matter until after the upcoming FIFA presidential election, which is scheduled for March 18, 2027, during the 77th FIFA Congress in Rabat, Morocco.
Since February 2022, Russian teams have faced widespread bans from international competitions following the country’s invasion of Ukraine. The proposed roadmap aims to test the waters with youth and women’s categories before addressing the senior levels. Critics, however, argue that any return should be contingent on a clear resolution of the geopolitical situation.
