Atalanta seemed destined for a comfortable victory after building a three-goal lead by the 88th minute, but the Rossoneri staged a dramatic late surge before ultimately falling 3-2 at San Siro in the 36th round of Serie A on Sunday night.
It was another frustrating evening for Portuguese winger Rafael Leão, who started the match, received a yellow card in the 34th minute, and was substituted at the hour mark amid audible discontent from the home fans. Atalanta had built a commanding 3-0 lead by that point.
Ederson opened the scoring in the seventh minute, and Zappacosta doubled the advantage in the 29th minute. After the break, Raspadori made it 3-0 just moments after Milan introduced Nkunku for Loftus-Cheek, and before coach Massimiliano Allegri also replaced Leão, Santiago Giménez, and Koni De Winter with Youssouf Fofana, Niclas Fullkrug, and Zachary Athekame.
Just when a heavy defeat seemed inevitable, Strahinja Pavlovic pulled one back in the 88th minute, sparking hope. In stoppage time, Milan earned a penalty, and Nkunku converted to make it 3-2 in the 94th minute. The hosts even had two more chances to equalize, but Raffaele Palladino’s Atalanta held on to claim all three points, moving to 58 points in seventh place. Milan remain fourth with 67 points, now level with Roma, who won 3-2 away at Parma earlier in the day.
In other Serie A action, Genoa—with Portuguese forward Vitinha starting—drew 0-0 away to Fiorentina. Como 1907 won 1-0 at Hellas Verona, and Cremonese beat Pisa 3-0 at home.
